Hands On: Kia Uvo powered by Microsoft Auto
Neowin
Kia Ovi is Kia's new infotainment center that is built upon the Microsoft 's automotive platform that also powers Ford's Sync. Neowin was able to get a hands on overview of the infotainment center and can see the future of Uvo once all kinks are worked out.
The infotainment center is set in the center of the dash and provides a touchscreen interface as well as responding to voice commands. Uvo offers many of the features that you would expect, mp3 playback from USB thumb drives and Bluetooth devices, iPod and Zune support, conduct phone calls, satellite radio support and many others as well that are all integrated into the user interface. One feature that is quite convenient is the playback of text messages that are received to the device via a phones Bluetooth connection.
The service, as put by the onsite rep, is in the initial phases of being rolled out and it was apparent in our demo. Uvo had trouble recognizing Tom Warren's voice at first which we suspect may be his accent interfering with the voice recognition software. Although, after some time the device did seem to pick up and acquire his commands more successfully towards the end of our demo. A full video tour of the service can be found in the video posted below.
The device is only being offered in the 2011 Sorento CUV initially but will expand to other models. There was a Kia Soul that did have the device equipped too but that will not be an option for the vehicle until after the Summer.

Nvidia announces Tegra update, GF100 GPU, 3D surround vision
Neowin
Nvidia has announced the new Tegra that updates their first generation Tegra, which is currently used in products such as the Zune HD. Tegra sports eight independent processors, a dual core ARM Cortex A9 CPU, and a power draw of only 500 milliwatts. The new Tegra brings 1080p video and even the ability to run games, such as Unreal Tournament III, with a small footprint, Adobe Flash 10.1 acceleration, and support for screen sizes from 5-15 inches. This opens the door for smaller, more power efficient mobile devices with complete multimedia capabilities to be created. Nvidia showcased a few examples, including a tablet running Android with HDMI output. Tegra currently supports Microsoft Windows CE, Ubuntu Linux, and Google Android. Qualified Nvidia registered developers can request the Tegra developer kit (http://tegradeveloper.nvidia.com/tegra/get-tegra) now.
In the ever-so-popular 3D category, a demonstration of Fujifilm's new 3D consumer point and shoot camera, FinePix REAL 3D W1, was given. Not only does it take 3D photos in a single shot, it can also record 3D video clips. You can then upload these clips to YouTube and make use of their 3D video player (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=yt3d%3Aenable%3Dtrue&search_type=&aq=f). Nvidia's line of 3D capable GPUs support these new technologies, allowing the user to see their home photos and videos like never before.
The new GeForce chip, GF100 which recently hit production plants, introduces 3D vision surround. This new technology allows you to have up to 6 million pixels, 3 times the resolution of HDTV. In the example Nvidia demonstrated, Avatar: The Game was being played on three side-by-side monitors, allowing the gamer to dive in to an immense 3D world. While nearly all modern games are capable of utilizing Nvidia's 3D architecture out of the box, there was not an estimate given on compatibility with 3D surround vision.

MSI Prepping Dual Screen, Nvidia-Powered eReader and a 3D Laptop
Gizmodo
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/500x_AsusEeeReader.jpg
Rumor has it that the eReader MSI plans to unveil (http://gizmodo.com/5390719/msis-ereader-will-have-nvidia-tegra-graphics-in-2010) at this year's CES will not only have Nvidia Tegra graphics (http://gizmodo.com/tag/tegra/), but dual screens as well. A 3D laptop may also be in the works.
Of course, as you can see from the Asus dual screen (http://gizmodo.com/tag/dualscreen/) eReader pictured here, the concept of a dual screen eReader (http://gizmodo.com/5354359/asus-eee-reader-could-have-dual-color-touchscreens) is nothing new. But I have to wonder how devices like this will compete or blend with (http://gizmodo.com/5436890/full-color-paradigm-shift-ereaders-for-under-200-shown-off-next-week-at-ces) more functional tablet computers (http://gizmodo.com/tag/tablets/). As for the 3D laptop, there isn't any further detail. Hopefully we will learn more when CES kicks off.

IdeaPad U1 Hybrid Hands-On: Meet Voltron. He Could Be Amazing.
Gizmodo
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/500x_ideapadu1slatebyshell1_03.jpg (http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/ideapadu1slatebyshell1_03.jpg)
Let's clarify two things right away: first, the Ideapad U1 hybrid notebook tablet (http://gizmodo.com/5440054/lenovos-ideapad-u1-is-one-smart-dual+processor-laptoptablet-hybrid) is still in the very rough stages of development. Second, it's going to be awesome—if it can live up to its potential.
Let's review the concept quickly before we get into the details. The U1 is literally two separate devices, joined together and made to play nice. One is a multitouch tablet that runs Linux and has a speedily efficient Qualcomm ARM 1Ghz Snapdragon processor running the show. The other is a Windows 7 notebook with an Intel Core 2 Duo SU 4100 processor.
The build is like Lenovo's other IdeaPads, except for the translucent red top that houses the tablet. When the base and the slate are linked up, the latter acts as an 11.6-inch, 720p (1366x768) monitor that looked crisp despite being saddled with Intel's integrated graphics. The (non-chiclet) keyboard is based on the current lineup of IdeaPads, and both it and the touchpad worked smoothly. The U1 we saw wasn't set up to do much other than web browse, and pages loaded quickly. The notebook has built-in Wi-Fi, but can also run off of the tablet's 3G connection, which I can see being a pretty great benefit for times when wireless isn't readily accessible.
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/500x_ideapadu1angle1_03.jpg (http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/ideapadu1angle1_03.jpg)
The fun part, though, is unclasping the tablet from its shell. It's firmly latched in, which is more reassuring than frustrating. Once removed from the notebook, there's a two or three second lag before the Snapdragon processor kicks in. It's not seamless, but it's close enough. Tablet mode greets you with a six-panel screen of apps similar to that of Lenovo's Skylight smartbook (http://gizmodo.com/5440161/lenovos-skylight-is-the-first-arm+based-snapdragon-smartbook). The selection is limited for now, but Lenovo will be opening up the SDK to developers soon to give you more to play with than the standard YouTube, Gmail, and Facebook-type options.
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/500x_ideapadu1slatetop1_03.jpg (http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/ideapadu1slatetop1_03.jpg)
You can also enter a type of content mode, which divides up your stored files between music, video, images, and documents. With the multitouch interface, you can quickly jump among all four, and adjust how much of the screen is devoted to each. The resistive screen was good, but not great—it at times took some pretty insistent pressing to get the response I was looking for. The viewing angles could also use work; unless you're looking nearly dead-on at the display, you're pretty much out of luck.
I was impressed by the sound quality—not excellent by any means, but better than I expected from a tablet device. One immediately obvious downside is the total absence of ports on the tablet other than the docking—there's not even a headphone jack. It's configured for Bluetooth, but I'd still like the option to plug in my buds. The tablet also currently lacks an accelerometer, so there's no way to orient documents or images based on its position. This is hopefully something that will be addressed before its release.
I said the two devices are totally separate, and I meant it. There are advantages and disadvantages to this set-up. On the plus side, while the tablet is undocked, you can hook the base up to a monitor and get full notebook functionality. If you remove it during web browsing, the tablet remembers which site you were on and places you there automatically (and vice versa). In fact, when I had Gizmodo in notebook mode and removed the slate, it automatically took me to the mobile version of Giz.
The down side is that right now, web pages are the only things that are transferable this way. If I were working on a document in notebook mode, there's no on-the-fly transition once I pop out the tablet. You can drag and drop, but a more seamless transfer would be helpful. It would also be nice to be able to control the tablet remotely with the base, but once they've separated there's no interaction between the two. Again, these are things that may or may not be addressed by the time the U1 comes out in the second half of this year.
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/500x_ideapadu1slatehand_03.jpg (http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/ideapadu1slatehand_03.jpg)
About that release: it's up in the air right now as to when you can get your hands on (http://gizmodo.com/tag/handson/) one of these, because of all of the tweaks that need to be made. It will also be crucial for Lenovo to be able to build up a decent store of apps for the U1 and the Skylight if these are going to have any functionality beyond very basic web browsing and media playback. And for an estimated retail price of $999—minus whatever subsidy they're able to get from a partner carrier—that functionality had better be there.
All in all, the U1 is a slick device, if a little undercooked. If nothing else, I'm excited to see how far they can take this concept once they put it in production. But no rush, Lenovo. If you take the time get it right, it'll be something special.

Samsung's LED LCD HDTV Lineup: The C9000 Does 3D and Has a Video-Previewing Touch Remote
Gizmodo
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/500x_led9000__55__r90_02.jpg
Samsung's LED LCD televisions are here and the flagship C9000 is a doozy. It's the only one they're calling "ultra thin", has 3D support in late 2010 and a touch remote that shows you content from other video sources!
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/500x_led9000_remote_01.jpg
The thinness (it's as skinny as a pencil) is achieved by shoving lots of guts into the pedestal, which doubles as a wall mount. The set can convert 2D content into 3D, although I'm sure of dubious quality. The remote looks rather Apple-ish in UI, but it can show you, as I said before, content from other sources, like live TV while watching a Blu-ray on the big screen. It has 240Hz tech, which we've never noticed as important in image quality, but it's there (needed for 3D). No word on sizes or prices, yet. There's Samsung app support, but platforms like these are never really well supported. The frame is very shiny.

World's First 3D Camcorder Will Cost $21,000 This Fall
Gizmodo
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2010/01/liveblog8.jpg
Earlier this year, Panasonic shared a dual-lensed 3D camcorder concept (http://gizmodo.com/5220145/panasonic-camcorder-packs-two-lenses-for-full-hd-in-3d) with the world. Today, they showed off a new iteration, which will be available...sometime, they promised. UPDATE
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/500x_liveblog1.jpg
More info reveals that the system is "full HD" (1920x1080) and uses simple SDHC/SD cards for recording...a medium that seems like such underkill for the price, but then again, SD cards are basically the most plentiful, cost-effective storage in existence.
But in terms of nitty gritty details like codecs? We'll have to wait.
Panasonic Unveils World's First Integrated Full HD 3D Camcorder at CES 2010
Available In Fall 2010 - Solid-State Recording System Will Offer Highly-Efficient Full HD 3D Video Production
LAS VEGAS, Nev., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Panasonic Corporation (NYSE: PC) will release the world's first* professional, fully-integrated Full HD 3D camcorder in Fall 2010. The company will begin taking orders in April. Engineering samples of the professional Full HD 3D solid-state camcorder will be exhibited at the Panasonic booth (Las Vegas Convention Center, Main Hall, #9405 (http://gizmodo.com/tag/9405/)) at the 2010 International CES in Las Vegas, USA, from January 7-10.
(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20100106/NY33307)
This Full HD 3D camcorder will offer the following core benefits:
Easier to Use
Current 3D systems are large-scale setups in which two cameras are fitted to a rig in parallel, or vertically intersect across a half-mirror. Separate recorders are also required. In Panasonic's new Full HD 3D camcorder, the lenses, camera head, and a dual Memory Card recorder are integrated into a single, lightweight body. The camcorder also incorporates stereoscopic adjustment controls making it easier to use and operate.
The twin-lens system adopted in the camcorder's optical section allows the convergence point** to be adjusted. Functions for automatically correcting horizontal and vertical displacement are also provided. Conventional 3D camera systems require these adjustments to be made by means of a PC or an external video processor. This new camcorder, however, will automatically recalibrate without any need for external equipment, allowing immediate 3D image capture.
More Flexible
The solid-state memory file-based recording system offers greater flexibility to produce Full HD 3D videos in more challenging shooting environments. The camcorder is lighter weight and smaller than current 3D rigs, while providing the flexibility of handheld-style shooting. Setup and transportation is simplified, making it ideal for sports, documentary and filmmaking projects.
Solid-State Reliability and Workflow
Right and left Full HD video streams of the twin-lens 3D camcorder can be recorded as files on SDHC/SD Memory Cards, ensuring higher reliability than on other tape, optical disc, HDD or other mechanical-based recording systems. This solid-state, no-moving-parts design will help significantly reduce maintenance costs, and the 3D camcorder will be better able to perform in extreme environments and be more resistant to temperature extremes, shock, and vibration.
And users will enjoy a fast, highly-productive file-based workflow, with instant, random access to recorded content; easy plug-in to both Mac and PC-based platforms; and longer recording capacity.
More Affordable
Using a standardized, fully integrated design, the Full HD 3D camcorder will be offered at a much lower price than traditional 3D rigs. Transportation expenses for this handheld unit will be less and faster setup times reduce labor costs. Using standard, re-recordable SDHC/SD Memory Cards available already everywhere, media costs become almost insignificant.
In addition to a camcorder, Panasonic also plans to offer a professional-quality 3D Full HD LCD monitor for field use as well as a professional HD digital AV mixer for live event production. Panasonic will offer professional production equipment to allow video professionals to efficiently create 3D content, so consumers can enjoy 3D video using Panasonic 3D home theater systems.
Major Specifications (tentative)
* Product Name: Twin-lens Full HD 3D camcorder (made-to-order)

The Invisible OLED Laptop to End All Laptops
Gizmodo
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/500x_500x_direct_tv_set_top-3.jpg
It's only a proof of concept, but this is laptop with a clear OLED screen—but a stone's throw from those floating 3D displays of Avatar. Practical? Not necessarily. The future? OBVIOUSLY.
The resolution is less than a 1000 wide, and less than 600 tall on this 14 incher. It's pixely, but let's not quibble.
You see right through the 40% translucent screen, then something appears on the screen (like a white background), and you can't see through it anymore.
Are you processing this? No, you can't be. It's only 2010. Man wasn't prepared for this kind of technology yet. The brain hasn't evolved enough. We're primates. Squirrels. Slugs.
Maybe in 100 or 200 years, the great artists of the world will reflect on what's happened today and make some sort of sense of it all. Until then, we'll just keep on breathing, in, out. Until then, we'll weep.

Gorilla Glass Hands On: UNBREAKABLE
Gizmodo
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/500x_gorillaglass.jpg
Maybe if you had a free weekend and Mjǫllnir, hammer of Thor, you could crack Corning's Gorilla Glass (http://www.corning.com/gorillaglass/index.aspx). But that's a made-up thing! And this stuff is impervious to the very real threats of key scratching and localized pressure.
Gorilla Glass is an unscratchable, unshatterable material used as a protective window for your mobile phone, PMP, or laptop display. It's in 65 products already, and I can assure you that the very nice man from Corning is not faking it. Your intrepid reporter also gave this several tries with all his blogger strength, and couldn't make a dent. I was, however, able to scratch the heck out of some polycarbonate.

First Hands-On and Video: Dell Mini 5 Android Slate
Gizmodo
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/500x_500x_dellslate4_01.jpg
Yesterday, we saw Dell's Slate concept (http://www.google.com/url?q=http://gizmodo.com/5442811/a-quickie-look-at-dells-slate-in-a-dark-corridor/gallery/&ei=nWdHS4nXNpXIsAOFzeT1Dw&sa=X&oi=nshc&resnum=1&ct=result&cd=1&ved=0CAgQzgQoAA&usg=AFQjCNFz9y2snE_9hsfv5AQM1yFc-YJImg) for the first time. Today, we got to actually play with it. And it's called the Mini 5.
Specs that we know: custom Android, SIM (it makes calls), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth. And the 5-inch screen supports full multitouch.
In your hand, it's very light and comfortable to use. The screen is responsive, and Dell's icon interface makes for intuitive presentation of Android.
It feels a bit more like plastic than, say, the iPod touch. But it was perfectly solid from what we could tell. Making a phone call turns the Mini 5 into a gigantic phone, almost like a handset out of a Carrot Top routine, but Dell expects most consumers will opt to use a headset.
The unexpectedly awesome feature? The 5MP camera. The Dell Mini 5 (http://gizmodo.com/tag/dellmini5/) has a 5-inch screen, and your subject fills the entire frame. It's an oddly satisfying implementation of a camera, in a super sizing kind of way.
My model wasn't connected to the web, so I didn't get to test the browser. And my hands-on time was more than limited (and frankly, a bit frantic), so I can't really speak sincerely on much else.
But let me say this: I like the Mini 5. And I dare say that Dell's software—their version of Android onboard—may be equally or more impressive than the hardware itself. I'm not sure I have a need for this or any 5-inch tablet, but you know what? I'm going to give em a shot all the same.

Street View, Navteq Maps the World in 3D... With Lasers
Gizmodo
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/500x_navteq_lidar.jpg
Google's Street View team famously photographs all kinds of weird stuff as they drive the world, but Navteq, who basically invented this stuff, just built a mount with seven cameras and 64 lasers to see everything better, in 3D.
Mounted atop a VW Jetta wagon is this crazy apparatus with a 12-megapixel panoramic camera on top and six more cameras pointed in specific directions to pick up signs and other data points. But the best gadgetry—the laser array—is housed inside a rapidly spinning barrel positioned at an angle. By using LIDAR, basically radar but with lasers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LIDAR), they scan everything within view, capturing 1.2 million points of data every second. The result is all kinds of terrain data that is not possible using just cameras.
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/500x_navteq_lidar_2.jpg (http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/navteq_lidar_2.jpg)
The goal is "high accuracy maps," a deliberately vague notion that ranges from additional information—bridge underpass clearance heights, multilayer cloverleaf navigation and other obvious issues—to super rich 3D environments like the ones you see below. Those aren't CG renderings, in the traditional sense, it's laser-enriched photography.
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/500x_navteq_lidar_scans.jpg (http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/navteq_lidar_scans.jpg)
Navteq, a Chicago company owned by Nokia who has been driving around making maps since the first GPS satellites were hurled into orbit, still provides a massive share of map data for web and devices, so the fruits of this tech might get to you sooner than you know.
As for your own personal rig, I sure want one, and my guess is that Google wants one too—if they don't have it already.
