I don't have special experience with Bridges camera like the Kodak one, I'm almost using DSLR. If you can tolerate the weight of a DSLR and have fun and time to learn about using it, you can choose an entry level one which do not cost a fortune (example : Nikon D3000 cost 450$ with a 18-55mm Kit lens). In fact, DSLRs outperform any Bridge or Point&Shoot camera (in picture quality, specially in low light, reactivity, and controls).

If you insist on bridge category, there is the Canon G12 which is positively reviewed on the web, never try it, and it costs about 500$ (you may find the previous model G11 with a good price)
